Lurleen Ladd grew up learning not to make waves. Raised in Houston and drawn to the stage from an early age—dancing, singing, twirling the baton—she loved performing, but self-doubt often kept her one step outside the spotlight. That fear followed her through her college years, leading her to drop out of a theater class to avoid the audition.
So instead, Lurleen built a formidable career in healthcare, serving vulnerable communities through public health, family planning, geriatric, and hospice care. Alongside her husband, Dan, she later co-founded a successful healthcare business and the nonprofit The Shade Project, promoting sun safety through education, screenings, and shade structures across Central Texas. She also launched Halloween by Design, an event company that raised funds for local nonprofits and domestic violence outreach programs.
Lurleen Ladd is reclaiming her power – through music!
All the while, she continued writing songs and singing behind the scenes. At age 38, Lurleen decided it was now or never. She went to Nashville, the songwriting capital, to immerse herself in the music industry. After a day of songwriting sessions, Lurleen was pushed on stage to perform one of her songs. Nervous but determined, she sang—only to hear someone shout, “You didn’t suck—sing another one!” She did. And she hasn’t slowed down since.
Now 20 years later, Lurleen has sold her healthcare company and fully embraced her passion: music. With three albums released and a fourth arriving this summer, Lurleen is no longer asking permission. She is reclaiming her voice, her dreams, and the space she was taught not to take up. She is also the founder of Wavemakers Women and Music, a fast-growing platform and community championing women musicians over 40, now celebrating its third anniversary in 2026 with members across the U.S. and abroad. On her new album, Reclamation, Lurleen puts a fearless personal stamp on iconic ‘80s hits—the soundtrack of her teenage years, when dreams of a music career first caught fire. Reimagining songs made famous by Rick Springfield, John Cougar Mellencamp, Dire Straits, Pat Benatar, Robert Palmer, and more, she isn’t just revisiting a decade—she’s reclaiming the spirit, ambition, and unfinished dreams those songs once inspired.
Because there is nothing more powerful than a woman over 40 who knows exactly who she is. Lurleen is making music, making waves, and lifting up others along with her.
Look out for Lurleen’s new album, Reclamation, in late Summer 2026.
Nothing is more dangerous than a woman over 40 who owns her own voice.
Lurleen Ladd is the Founder of Wavemakers Women and Music – a movement, a community, and a platform that amplifies the artistry, experience, and leadership of women. After launching her music career in her early 40s, Lurleen discovered that there were women around the country who were over 40 facing the same challenges she was facing. She wanted to create a platform where women could connect and have a much needed dialogue about the unique challenges and advantages in being a female creative in the music industry in the 21st century.
In March 2023, Lurleen hosted a panel of women musicians, all over 40, at Antone’s in Austin. Lurleen observed that this event “created a template where decision makers, the artists and the audience came together to challenge the status quo, champion female musicians 40+ and forge a path that celebrates creativity at any age.”
By uniting creativity, culture, and collaboration, Wavemakers are shaping the conversations, connections, and experiences that ripple beyond the stage.
If you’re a woman entering — or fully owning — your 40+ chapter and looking for a space to be bold, creative, and fully seen, Wavemakers is a community worth discovering.
